Impoliteness strategies used by Charlie and Nicole in marriage story
This study aims to investigate the types of impoliteness strategies and the similarities and the differences from the utterances that contain impoliteness strategies used by Charlie and Nicole in Marriage Story. In this study, the writer uses the theoretical framework of impoliteness strategies theory proposed by Culpeper (1996, 2005, 2011), Culpeper et al. (2003) and Bousfield (2008). Furthermore, the writer uses the qualitative method for this study. The findings of this study show that Charlie used five out of seven types of impoliteness strategies: bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm/mock politeness, and withhold politeness when he is interacting with Nicole during an argument, meanwhile Nicole used only four out of seven types of impoliteness: bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm/mock politeness. In addition, both Charlie and Nicole also have similarities in not using two out of seven types of impoliteness strategies: banter/ mock impoliteness and off-record impoliteness. On the other hand, the difference that was found in this study is that Charlie used withhold politeness, while Nicole did not use that type. Apparently, the writer found that impoliteness strategies in Marriage Story mainly appear because of the marriage conflict and emotional tension between Charlie and Nicole during their heated arguments.
