A speech act analysis on Ellen DeGeneres and Martha Stewart’s conversations in The Ellen Show
This study investigates how Ellen DeGeneres and Martha Stewart's interaction on The Ellen Show balances corporate branding and entertainment value using Austin and Searle's Speech Act Theory. Qualitative analysis shows a two-tier communication system: conversational alignment during professional segments reinforces Stewart's authoritative brand, while DeGeneres' playful interruptions create comedic incongruity that makes audiences laugh. The study shows that successful talk shows need a good balance between smooth teamwork and funny tension. This proves that awkward conversational moments are a smart business strategy used to mix a guest's professional image with the entertainment the audience wants.
