Self-awareness plays a crucial role in children’s emotional and social development, yet its research during early middle childhood remains relatively understudied. This creative thesis addresses this gap through a realistic fiction picture book that explores the impacts of lacking self-awareness in children aged six to eight. The study examines how limited self-awareness affects five main characters, Leo, Kuro, Sammy, Olive, and Poppy, as well as investigates how they learn to cope with its consequences. The stories are based on Susan Harter’s theory of self-concept development and Masaki’s sociocultural perspective of self-regulation. The stories show that a lack of self-awareness may lead children to misinterpret social situations, disregard the effects of their actions on others, and experience negative peer responses, such as rejection, avoidance, and exclusion. Growth happens when the characters reflect on social feedback, noticing the gap between their intentions and their behavior, and gradually adjusting their actions. Through these stories, this creative work encourages young readers to reflect on their own behavior and social relationships.
