Drivers of green purchasing decisions: evidence from Gen Z consumers in Indonesia's packaged food and beverage sector
Seeing the seriousness of plastic waste problems in Indonesia’s food and beverage (F&B) industry, the misalignment between Indonesian Gen Z's environmental awareness and their purchasing behavior, and the inexistence of studies specifically focusing on Indonesian Gen Z's green purchase decisions (GPD) in the packaged F&B sector, this study explores the drivers of GPD among Indonesian Generation Z. It examines the effects of Green Perceived Quality (GPQ), Green Awareness of Price (GAP), Green Willingness to Purchase (GWP), and Green Perceived Benefits (GPB) on GPD, with Environmental Concern (EC) as the mediating variable. Using a quantitative approach and simple random sampling, data were collected through online questionnaires from 202 Indonesian Gen Z respondents. Those data were then analyzed with Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to test proposed hypotheses of this study. The analysis showed that the influence of GAP towards EC was not statistically significant. The same applied to its influence towards GPD when mediated by EC. It was only GWP, GPB, and GPQ that have positive and significant influences on EC, while also positively and significantly influencing GPD when mediated by EC. In addition, the analysis proved that EC positively and significantly influenced GPD. Therefore, these findings show that Indonesian marketers and policymakers should create strategies that enhance Indonesian Gen Z's GWP, stimulate EC, highlight GPB, and ensure high GPQ to effectively increase Indonesian Gen Z’s green purchasing decisions in the Indonesian packaged F&B sector.
