An analysis of Deixis types in the press releases by Lego Group and Apple
Steven Calvin A Critical Thesis An Analysis of Deixis Types in the Press Releases by Lego Group and Apple This study investigates the pragmatic application of deixis types in the press releases “NIKE and the LEGO Group Celebrate Global Multi-Year Partnership with New Products and Engaging Experiences This Summer Based in Active and Creative Play” and “Global App Store helps developers reach new heights, supporting $1.3 trillion in billings and sales in 2024”, employing a pragmatic concept based on Huang’s theory, which categorizes deixis into person, place, time, social, discourse, and emotional types of deixis. The study aims to study the types of deixis used in the press releases by the Lego Group and Apple, and analyze the similarities and differences in terms of the use of language strategies deictically. This study utilizes a descriptive qualitative method to examine sentences from the two official corporate press releases. The results reveal that these types of deixis (i.e., person, place, time, social, discourse, and emotional) are found in both press releases, except for the absence of emotional deixis in Apple's press release. The significant distinctions rest on the frequency and functional application of deixis types in both different press releases. These findings underline the importance of deixis' role in shaping effective communication in press releases. Keywords : pragmatics, deixis, press releases, sentences
