Code-Switching in the Instagram captions of male and female perfume Ads by C&F Store
This study aims to analyze the types of code-switching used in the Instagram captions of male and female perfume advertisements by C&F Store. The writer focused on identifying what types of code-switching appeared and whether there were any differences or similarities between the male and female captions. The theory used in this research was from Hoffmann (2014), who divided code-switching into three types: inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and emblematic switching. A total of 40 captions were analyzed consisting of 20 of male perfumes and 20 of female perfumes. Only captions that used more than one language were analyzed. The writer used a qualitative approach and collected the data manually. The result showed that inter-sentential switching appeared 40 times and intra-sentential switching appeared 39 times, both in male and female captions. Emblematic switching was not found in any of the captions. There were no major differences between how code-switching was used in male and female advertisements. Most of the captions followed a similar pattern, which might be because they were written by the same marketing team or followed a particular template. The writer hopes this study can help readers understand more about how code-switching works in social media advertising, especially in Indonesia. Hopefully, this study can also inspire future research to explore code-switching in other platforms like TikTok or YouTube.
