Code-switching used by Felicia Putri Tjiasaka and Timothy Ronald on YouTube Videos on Crypto investment
This study analyzes the use of code-switching by two Indonesian finance influencers in their YouTube videos on cryptocurrency investment, they are Felicia Putri Tjiasaka and Timothy Ronald. Guided by Hoffmann’s (1991) theory, this research identifies three types of code-switching, such as intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and emblematic switching, and also examines how these linguistic strategies are used to convey financial information. A qualitative approach was applied in this research, with data collected from the transcription of two YouTube videos and analyzed by categorizing each code-switching event. The findings show that both influencers predominantly use intra-sentential switching, representing 92.47% of Felicia Putri Tjiasaka’s and 95.79% of Timothy Ronald’s total use. Felicia Putri Tjiasaka uses code-switching to create an engaging and relatable communication style, blending Indonesian with English expressions to establish closeness with her audience. Conversely, Timothy Ronald relies on English technical terms to point out accuracy, clarity, and professional credibility in explaining financial concepts. The comparison indicates that while both employ code-switching frequently, their purposes were different. Felicia Putri Tjiasaka focuses on audience engagement, while Timothy Ronald focuses on expertise. Overall, code-switching purpose not only as a linguistic phenomenon but also as a communication strategy and a tool for personal branding in digital financial education.
