Anatomy of Perfection is an interactive fiction project that examines the growing entanglement between AI systems, beauty standards, and female identity. Developed using Twine and framed through speculative body horror, the work places the reader in the role of a beauty-optimization AI tasked with raising a young woman’s Perfection Index (PI) to 100%, a target that is, by design, unattainable. By presenting the narrative entirely through the AI’s perspective, the project exposes how algorithmic logic reduces the human body to data and how simulated empathy masks efficiency-driven objectives. The branching structure, informed by theories of objectification and research on the cold, clinical design of AI chatbots, creates moral dilemmas in which readers must choose between compliance with system directives or empathetic intervention, ultimately shaping Gabriella’s psychological and physical transformation. There are a total of five endings that the reader can get, ranging from self-destruction to liberation, and each ending reflects the reader’s own ethical orientation. Through this creative work, the thesis highlights the dangers of uncritical dependence on AI, the persistence of unattainable beauty ideals, and the psychological costs of technologies that promise optimization while eroding autonomy. The project ultimately argues that while AI does dehumanize its user to some extent, both AI and the user, if they internalize system logic at the expense of bodily awareness and self-worth, are complicit in this dehumanization.
