Analyzing translation strategies used in komedi kacau (comedy chaos)

This research examines the subtitle translation of the Indonesian web-series Komedi Kacau (Comedy Chaos), focusing on the work of the translator, (Maulana, Netflix). The primary goal is to assess the accuracy of the subtitle translation and explore the translation strategies applied by the translator. To conduct the analysis, the study uses Baker’s (2018) translation strategies framework, which consists of three main strategies: Equivalence at Word Level, Equivalence Above Word Level, and Grammatical Equivalence. Based on the findings, the translator primarily used two strategies: Equivalence at Word Level and Equivalence Above Word Level. Equivalence at Word Level focuses on translating individual words, including their morphemes and lexical meanings, to ensure accuracy in the target language. On the other hand, Equivalence Above Word Level deals with translating more complex linguistic elements such as collocations and idiomatic expressions to maintain contextual meaning. By analyzing the translation through the meaning and context, the study demonstrates how the applied strategies mostly preserve the original meaning and ensure clarity in the translated subtitles.
