Asa Leventhal as victim of his own identity as seen in Saul Bellow's the Victim

This thesis is about the main male character as a victim of his own
identity. The main male character in this novel, Asa Leventhal, is uncomfortable
with his Jewishness. He feels that people around him are against him or persecute
him because of his Jewishness. He feels uneasy about his own identity. He cannot
overcome his becoming a victim of his own identity. Therefore, the thesis writer
wants to find out in what ways Asa Leventhal becomes a victim of his own
identity. In analyzing the topic, the thesis writer uses library research and the
internet in collecting the data regarding the novel of Saul Bellow?s The Victim.
The thesis writer uses literary approach by applying the literary tools such as
characterization and conflict and the ideas and standpoint that are against Jew in
general, the anti-Semitism. In the analysis, the thesis writer analyzes Asa
Leventhal?s birth as a Jew and the anti-Semitism in his surroundings, that is, the
anti-Semitism against Leventhal?s family, the anti-Semitism in the society and
Kirby Allbee as the reflection of the anti-Semite force in the society. The thesis
writer concludes that Asa Leventhal becomes a victim of his own identity in the
ways he rejects the reality that he is a Jew.
