This book is perfect in every way. The writing is superb, the character development is fresh and complicated, and the social issues of race, socio-economics, employee-relations are so relatable and timely. Through the first half of the book I was rooting for Emira and Alix to grow together and form a deeper relationship beyond employee-employer, but soon I began to question my own desire for that particular storyline. This book is the gut-punch of reality needed for white people to examine their privilege, their narrative, their motives, and why despite everything that happens in this book, more often than not, a white reader will still want to root for the white character Alix. I absolutely loved this book for the story and the characters, but I also loved that it helped me learn and take time to think about some of my gut reactions regarding assumptions and race. I can’t wait for Kiley to write her next book! I am a lifelong fan!
