In this research, I analyze Disney's live-action Mulan (2020) that focuses on Mulan's defiance of traditional roles. I am interested in analyzing this text because it highlights the themes of female empowerment and the act of liberating herself from the expectations of her role as a woman. This study explores Mulan's behaviors that are inconsistent with the expected gender roles, leading to Mulan’s liberating herself by embracing both her feminine and masculine traits. This analysis will use two main theories, the theory of Social Roles focusing on gender and the concept of Confucianism as a support, to analyse Mulan’s behaviour that are inconsistent with the traditional gender roles. The second one is The Bem Sex Inventory to identify the masculine and feminine traits that Mulan embodies while incorporating Giddens concept of agency to analyse the ways Mulan liberates herself from the expected roles. The finding reveals that Mulan’s defiance comes from her desire to remain true to herself as she liberates herself by embracing her feminine and masculine traits.
