Study of the ironical and comic elements the main character, John Loveday, in Thomas Hardy's The Trumpet Major

The Trumpet Major is one of Thomas Hardy's minor novels with historical setting, the Napoleonic war. The main
character of the novel, John Loveday is a portrait of a character who faces situation that demands a courageous
action. As a soldier, John has to deal with many terrifying wars, even he has to be ready to die as the consequence. Yet, when John faces love problem, his courage cannot "talk" so much as it happens during the war. This condition shows that John is ironical and comic. Being interested in John's life, the thesis writer would like to discuss in what ways the main character of the novel is ironical and comic. In the analysis, the thesis writer uses the theories of conflict and characterization to prove that John is ironical and comic. The study discovers that as a soldier, John is a soldier with a great courage, on the other side as a common person, he does not struggle for his own love, he becomes speechless and denies his love.
