"It is innate in man to want to revenge when he is wronged" (Collins 104). This applies to the main character in Alexandre Dumas?s The Count of Monte Cristo Edmond Dantes, when he is wrongfully denounced and henceforward undone. Dantes?s vengeance upon his enemies, particularly his character change before the denunciation, after the denunciation, and after the revenge would be the core discussion in this thesis. Dantes, a simple and soft-hearted sailor, is wrongfully denounced and later he seeks revenge upon his enemies. Thus, the thesis writer aims to figure out whether there is a character change in Dantes before and after the denunciation, and after the revenge. In order to analyze the character change of Dantes, the keyterm of revenge and the theories of characterization and conflict are utilized. In studying the character of Dantes, the thesis writer analyzes the four ways in which
Dantes?s character is disclosed. The four ways are what Dantes says and thinks, what he does, what other characters say about him, and what the narrator says about him. Besides, the internal conflicts of Dantes are used to achieve the purpose of the study. The thesis writer draws some conclusions from her analysis. First, there is a change in Dantes?s character before and after he is denounced, and after he completes his revenge. Secondly, taking revenge does not always bring satisfaction for the doers. Finally, vengeance makes a man?s character become worse.
