This thesis is a study of Sir Walter Scott's The
Bride of Lammermoor. Through the analysis on Sir
William and Lady Ashton's ambition, the writer intends
to prove that the tragic life of their daughter, Lucy
Ashton is the resuIt of their big ambition, To
accomplish the objective goal of the thesis, the use of
ambition, characterization, conflict as the literary
approaches are necessary, Efesides that psychological
theory and the condition of life at. that time are also
very important to support, this thesis. The ambitious of
Sir William and Lady Ashtan creates the suffering on
Lucy, as Sir William and Lady Ashton continuously force
her to follow their will. As a normal human being who
cannot, stand such pressure, Lucy tries to solve her
problems. Finally, Lucy decides to follow her parents
will and she realizes that she becomes desperate and
frustated. To end all of her suffering, Lucy commits
suicideon her wedding day.
