This thesis discusses the external and the internal
factors that influence Rufus to commit suicide in James
Baldwin's Another Country. In analyzing these factors, the
thesis writer uses the data from the novel, Another Country
supported by criticism on the author and novel ; some
psychological theories on environment and human development,
alienation, despair, and some psychological and sociological
reasons on suicide and the literary theory on conflicts.
At last, the thesis writer finds out that Rufus' decision to
commit suicide is influenced by his past life. It relates to
his family and the bad treatments of white people. Besides,
the alienation and despair are also the main influential
factors.
